Right now many websites are suffering from brute force WordPress attacks. No website, hosting company, or individual is safe from this, but there are some steps you can take to manage or evade a website hack.

First, you should have a new administrator username, not the default "admin". If you're still using "admin", log in, create a new administrator account for yourself, and then log into that new account and either delete or downgrade the "admin" user. (Remember to attribute all "admin" posts to your new user account!)

Second, change your login password right now. If you're using something like "password123" or "iloveyou" there is a good chance you'll get hacked easily.

Third, install the Limit Login Attempts plugin listed here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/limit-login-attempts/

Fourth, if you still feel wary and want an extra layer of protection, log into your cPanel account with us and activate CloudFlare. CloudFlare will provide a buffer between your website and hackers, and it is an excellent tool to fight against crippling website attacks like this one.

Attacks like this occur all the time, but rarely at this scale. There are a reported 90,000 IP addresses involved with the attack! The steps above will help you not only fight this attack but future ones. WordPress is a growing choice among websites and it currently is run by approximately 10% of the world's websites, attacks like this will only get worse in the future and it's better if you're secured today.

Make sure you are always being hosted with a reliable, secure, and cutting-edge hosting company too! If you're being hosted by HostArmor™, you've already made the right choice. We will continue to assist customers through email, phone calls, or support tickets should their website(s) fall under this attack. Share this post with anyone you know who uses WordPress, they'll thank you for it!
